Happy new year everyone!
As you may have noticed I love the island lifestyle. Jimmy Buffett meets Bbq, ahhh the best.
It’s always been a dream of mine to spend part/all of the holidays in the islands. With no grandkids and our kids grown up, this was the year! What better place to spend it but my favourite island, “ the Barbados”. Beautiful beaches, hot weather, fantastic seafood and the most kind, easy going people you will ever meet.
Departure day December 18th couldn’t come quick enough for me. The plan was to leave Dec 18th and return Christmas Day to attend family Christmas on Boxing Day. Haha stay tuned, sometimes the best made plans change. Fortunately both Chloe and Ciara could get the time off school, work and were able to go. So off we go early morning on the 18th and by 4 pm we are at our vrbo and I’m enjoying a cold banks beer on the patio. Across the road for supper at cafe del sol for a couple drinks then we call it a night. We have beaching to do tomorrow.
For the next 7 days we hit a variety of local beaches ( Dover, Rockley, Carlisle bay and Paynes bay, Rihanna’s home when on the island). Each one offers something a little different. Paynes bay is very quiet, Rockley beach is home of Chicken George and Yankee George’s beach bar. in my opinion the best fish sandwich on the island! Rockley is also my fav beach on the island. It offers a little of everything. A couple beach bars, good swimming, bar service to your chair, decent snorkelling with the opportunity to see Turtles ( which we did). Nighttime’s were spent at happy hours, restaurants and bars mostly in St Lawrence gap. A couple of our favourite nights included a walk up to worthing square which is a collection of food trucks with a stage in the middle where various bands play with both locals and tourists hanging out. The trucks offer everything from seafood to South American to pizza and wings. It’s an awesome night, I highly recommend it. Next on the list is a trip to Tapas restaurant. Tapas is a fusion of carribean meets Italian food. And it’s crazy good. I had a very large perfectly done beef rib. Christmas Eve we made a reservation at Mimosa’s Trattoria bar. The food here is good but we come for the ambiance. Nothing like sitting Oceanside enjoying the warm breeze and beautiful night. This sure beats eating boxed appetizers and being cooped up inside on Christmas Eve at home.
After a great week of 30 weather, beaches, bars and restaurants it’s Christmas Day and time to go home. Our friend and fav cab driver Michael drives us to the airport ( Michael by the way invited us to his family Christmas before he knew we were leaving Christmas Day. I tell you the Bajan people are the best) after saying thanks and goodbye we head into the airport. Close to our departure time it’s announced our flight is delayed, shortly after it’s cancelled due to a mechanical issue. What now? Well after a few anxious moments from a couple members in our group west jet announces that they will be putting us up for the night a local resort. Somehow we end up at Sugar Bay Barbados resort. It’s all inclusive and frankly among the best resort we have been too. I mean it’s high end. Over $1000/ night per person lol. Yeah per person. The Christmas dinner consisted of pretty much any food you were looking for. Beers, drinks, more beers more drinks. Might as well enjoy this freebie. We close the beach bar and head to the late night English pub for beers, music, dancing ect ect. Come 2:15 am our friendly bartender informs us he is closing shortly, then pours us another round! Lol It’s been one long day. 9:00 am hits and we are up for breakfast and on the private resort beach to enjoy the day. Or least as much as we can prior to leaving for the airport.
After lunch it’s off to the airport. This time everything goes smooth. We board and 5 hours later we are back in Toronto, which includes the snow and the cold. Good to be back? No I would gladly have stayed for another week or 12. I keep telling myself, some day, some day.
Thank you to the people of Barbados, your island is the best.
Fins up, till next time
